This year is going to be big for God Des and She! A North American tour, new album and an European tour this April.
I have to let you know, I’ve been an avid follower of these two for the last 4 years, and I am extremely excited to say they are coming back to Houston. This will be the third time. The concert will be held at Dan Electro’s Piano Bar on Saturday, January 26.
I was given the chance this week to do an interview with the band their new album releasing on February 5. This album is appropriately named “United States of God Des and She” due to the messages that they are making loud and clear in their songs.
While talking to them both, you could hear the passion in their voices about this album. “This is really our sound, we found ourselves.” The duo stated. This is quite different than the last album “Three” I guess you could say the last album was a lot happier. God Des said “In this album we wanted to bring light to what was going on in the world… we don’t want to stand by while all these things are happening.”
With the newest video “God, I Know You Love Me”, just released, is not a happy thing. It is real life, what is going on to our LGBT youth; it is what causes so many of our youth to take their lives. It is all sad and true all at the same time. I had to ask them why such a deep sad video and God Des was very quick to point out “We had to bring light to the things happening in the world. This still happens, it’s detrimental to someone’s health, it causes suicide!”
Curious on why the two of them haven’t given in to the mainstream music industry by self-funding records, writing what they want, not signing with any major label, I asked why? “We can’t be different, and we are not willing to sacrifice ourselves to be famous. I think if you do good music, word will spread and that is how we will be famous” God Des said. She then added “We are lucky enough to have a fan base that can’t be taken from us, and it’s what makes people famous.”
If you have ever seen them on stage you will see why they mesh so well and you know that curiosity gets the best of me and I had to ask. “She can’t sing the way she does without passion, and it has to be important for me to rap about it.” God Des stated. They both stated another reason is because how they hear music so similarly, from their likes to dislikes from the good to the bad.
There are not many entertainers that I would go see as many times as I have these two. I think She perfectly summed it up for me, “You don’t have to be gay to like us, just listen! We have people from 18 year old lesbians to old women who listen to us. I mean, I have men that work in the factory with my dad who listen to us, and love us!”
The energy that goes on while God Des & She are performing is exuberant! After telling them how much I am amazed by the energy that is in the room while they are performing She responded, “Just Listen! You can feel the energy and emotion! So much energy going on that you can Gay fly around the room!”
