After serving Houston’s LGBT country genre since 1979, the BRB is closing

The Houston Voice Posted on February 5th, 2013

I learned today from former MR. BRB, Craig Sanford via Facebook that the Brazos River Bottom will be closing Saturday, March 30. The BRB has been at its present location since 1979. The owners have sold the building and plan to relocate.

The building that houses Houston’s only LGBT Country and Western bar is over a 100 years old. The BRB has been home to many clubs like the Colt 45′s, Southern Country and TGRA.

“Its a place we feel welcome, feel at home, feel comfortable to be ourselves, a place where we are close friends with the staff and owners, a place we have laughed, cried, drank, socialized, raised millions of dollars, met friends, lost friends, hooked up, acted foolish..all with one another.” Sanford said in his post.

“My best memory is from March 2010 to March 2011, as I was honored to represent, and raise money as Mr BRB 2010.”

The club plans to hold a big event before they close. To keep up to date check out BRB’s facebook page or visit www.brbtx.com

Justin, I am with you. If you quote a source it’s okay to use it as long as it is being linked back to the original source. Times are changing, and what used to be frowned upon 20 years ago, is okay in today’s media. You are not the first or last writer to use a quote in such a way.

Apparently, Mr. Galloway, you did not appreciate my last conment calling out you not actually interviewing your sources, but rather, pulling their “statements” from Facebook instead. That’s a pathetic excuse to use when “writing” an article for publication. You’re sad.

Ms. Mason (Andy) the reason your previous post was removed from the comments, are because personal attacks against members of the staff or readers of the Houston Voice are prohibited. Since you have resorted to name calling (as seen above) I decided to respond.

Using social media in blog post is quite common and expected in modern blogging and journalism. I found nothing in the AP stylebook that said I can not use social media in a story as long as I have called, emailed or talked too others to confirm and get sources, which I have.

No where did I equate Mr. Sanford’s quote as an “interview” so I am not sure what you are referring too. I did just add “in his post” to make it more clear for you. I consider Craig a friend of mine and I know his heart felt feelings are genuine and felt his way of expressing them were appropriate for the little blog post. I talked to him and he is quite aware that I re-posted his comment.

I have seen you a few times Ms. Mason at the BRB, but don’t think we have ever spoken, so I am not sure why you have such ill-feelings towards me. I will be at the BRB this Saturday, so feel free to come talk to me and say hello. We do respect all creative feedback positive or negative as long as it is not attacking people and non-constructive.

      Thanks, Justin Galloway
